Time Travel bag challenge

E I'm a moderator in a virtual group with a meaningful name "A girl can't have too many handbags" - it's my translation, the group members are Russian-speaking bag freaks from all over the world. Resently the entries for a bag challenge "Time Travel" were revealed with great success. There are no winners nor loosers in our challenges, just creative participants and pure joy of the show-and-tell. This time there were about 40 bags and a lovely story about each personal time travel of an author. There are two my bags there too, I'll tell about them later on. With the permission of the participants I've made a challenge album at Flickr and now you are welcome to see and to admire the craft skills and the creativity of my bag friends. Here below are just a few photos and all entries you can find in the album "Time Travel".   Please come and see, you will not regret about it.

IKEA - Miracle of Denim

E I've decided to make a new shoulder bag for me, for I had none more. "None" means that all my numerous shoulder bags were sold, given away or too battered. (or too good to wear). I've used the pattern from my ole good IKEA Flying Geese bag and wanted to make a new version of it. There was  yet another IKEA fabric in my stach, IKEA Susanna with circles, now out of print. Then the fabric asked for a plain (black) background. By cutting apart a pair of black jeans I've found something extremely useful - a pocket lining with a printed text "Miracle of denim" and right away incorporated the fabric into the bag. I've fused the scraps of lining onto the bag parts and secured them with several lines of stitching:

E Then I've quilted the whole surface with free-motion quilting. I've been out of practice in FMQ and you can see it - no backtracking at all. "But this should be the wearable bag for me, not the family heirloom", I said to myself and let it go.

D  Die fertige Tasche sieht so aus:
E Now the bag looks like this:

D  Und so ist die Rückseite:
E And the back side:

E And this is a new bag with the Flying Geese prototype:

E I've tested the new bag already, it's really good.

Fishy goes abroad

E Here is the page from the Japanese craft magazine Cotton Time 3/2014:

E And this is mine, called Here Fishy Fishy, photo taken in July 2012, blogged here:

E I really don't know, maybe it's just a coincidence. But then again, a frog too...

Do you still recognize the Origami squares?

E I've made these two things as illusrations for my Origami-Workshop. I find them both cute and rather interesting.

The first one is a small purse matching for the batics tote bag. It was like an improv quilting: I had to find a use for  those stylised roses out of origami squares. And a girl can't have too many purses:

E It's not the best 3D-roses ever. But I like them since they are another way of  my favorite origami squares

E But there's more in the versatile origami square than that, When stuffed with fiberfill the roses turn to nice puffs - not a new block too, but then again, another variation of O.S. I've made 10 puffs out of plaids leftovers and joined them together into a (sewing) basket.

D Hoffentlich mögen meine potentielle Kursteilnehmerinnen diese Modelle.
E I hope my potential students will like them both.

Stellation quilt

Also an die Arbeit.

E It's not very easy for me in Germany to take part at a quilt festival in Russia. But the theme of 2014 was Stars and what can be better for a traditional quilter (or a contemporary quilter like me)? Nothing except for Log Cabin. So I've decided to take part. The idea of a star quilt came quickly. In fact I had them in mind since my school days - stellated polyhedra (I had strange school days, really)

Stellation is, as Kepler described in 1619, "the process of extending edges or faces until they meet to form a new polygon or polyhedron". Luckily for me these new polyhedra look like very complex and beautiful stars. From a great set of stellation I've chosen four basic "stars", so-called Kepler-Poinsot polyhedra. The youngest of them is from the year 1809, so there should be no copyright problems.

My own Lili Marleen

Stoff rausgefischt:

E It was another challenge in our virtual bag group and the theme was "Cherchez la femme". We had to make any kind of bag/purse/tote/rucksack with any kind of woman portrait, not an abstract idea of a portrait or a woman. It wasn't an easy task for me since - you know - I'm not a drawing person. But luckily enough I've found a piece of old and ugly(?) fabric in my stash, someone's giveaway:

E As a matching background fabric I couldn't find anything better than an old armee laundry bag with holes in it due to frequent use:

Also aus all diesem Kram entstand so eine Tasche:

E I've found a matching lining too: a gorgeous fabric with navy blue paisleys and brown roses (without a photo, sorry). Also a little bit of this or that, a small piece of (new) brown op-art fabri and at the end the bag looked like this:

E Both fabrics, the focus fabric with the girl and the laundry bag fabric, were too old and frail for the machine quilting, so I've quilted the bag entirely by hand. Freeform sashiko-like quilting on the front flap:

E ... and a regular grid everywhere else, like here at the back pocket:

D  Als Verschluss dienen zwei Magnetknöpfe unter der Klappe:
E The flap covers and secures with magnetic buttons two front pockets:

E After cutting out the flap there was not much left of the girl fabric. But "Marlene" was still there and what name could be better for a bag made out of a fabric with excerpts from German mode magazines and an american army laundry bag? Lili Marleen was the only choice. Not a long time before there was an excibition in Heidelberg  entirely devoted to Lili Marleen and I was totally fascinated by the history and the song itself.

Until the last moment I didn't know, whether the bag would be better "as is" or with a cream lace at the flap. I hesitated since the bag was made for everyday use and the lase is not the most practical thing. But then I thought, in our harsch world there has to be place for tenderness and fragility. So I've decided to sew the lace on:

Und alle Leute soll'n es sehn,
Wenn wir bei der Laterne stehn
Wie einst Lili Marleen,
Wie einst Lili Marleen

Something about me in Lena's Patchwork magazine

E "Something" means two whole pages! with photos of me and my bag/quilt creations! and another photo at the content page! and moreover, my quilt "Not sooo crazy"! I'm happy like an elf in a tree.

E This is the cover - without me:

E And this is how it all looks like. The bag  is Lili Marleen bag made of  a vintage fabric and an upcycled army laundry bag:

E Here are: Orange Tree (above), Honeybee Bag (below left, I hope to see it soon in the magazine) and... so to say, Noname bag (below right), made of a recycled woven bag and recycled fabrics, has no name yet:

D  Last but not least kommt die letzte Umschlagseite mit dem Quilt "Not sooo crazy".

E Last but not least the back cover with my "Not sooo crazy" quilt. It's made for the Crayon challenge in our local quilt group and was my first crazy quilt:
