Africa Tote Bag

D Der Quilt Afrika war äußerst schwer. Ich meine, er wog eine Tonne und war kaum unter dem Maschinenfuß zu bewegen. Ganz von den unzahligen Jeansnähten zu schweigen. Es was völlig unmöglich, ihn mit free-motion quilting zu quilten. Ich mußte also ein Quiltmuster für den Onertransporter ausdenken und es auf jeden Fall vorher testen. Laut meiner neuen Richtlinie startete ich sofort mit einer Testtasche anstatt vom Testsandwich.

Die gequilteten "Felder" sind Fortsetzungen und Erweiterungen der Straßen aus einem der Stoffstücke:

E  The Africa quilt was really heavy and consisted mostly of seam allowances. It prevented me completely from the free motion quilting and returned me to the old good walking foot. And I had to make the quilting test first. And again I decided to make a test bag, not just a test quilt.

Here it is. The quilting lines continue the pattern from one of the fabrics:

D Innerhalb von "Feldern" habe ich noch die "Rillen" gequiltet. Die Rillen gibt's auf dem Quilt nicht: eine Sache ist, eine relativ kleine Tasche unterm Maschinenfuß zu drehen und ganz Andere, den 120x120 cm großen Quilt. Ich habe lediglich die "Felder" geschafft.

E As you can see, I wanted to quilt not just "fields"; but a kind of furrows inside the fields. It worked for the bag, but the quilt was still too heavy even for such straight-line furrows.

D Erst nach der Umfassung des Quitls mit supertollem Mandarinorange habe ich die Tasche fertiggemacht.

D Im Grunde ist es eine Einkaufstüte. Die unteren Ecken sind abgenäht, die Tasche ist gefuttert und hat ein Innenfach mit Reißverschluss. Nur die Form ist mal anders.

E Actually, the bag is a slightly improved version of a darted tote bag, with lining and a zipped inside pocket. It's just the slanted form that makes the difference.

D Die tolle Farbe entspricht seht genau der Farbe des Auto auf dem Foto unten. Es ist nicht mein Auto! Die Tasche links auf der Bank:

D Noch ein Waisenkind vom Blogging, d.h. noch eine vergessene Tasche.
Und nicht die letzte, es kommt später noch eine.

D Das Quilttop "Nearly" war fertig und wartete darauf, gequiltet zu werden. Ich wußte genau, wie ich es quilten wollte: Spiralen mit  dem Obertransporter, kein free motion. Nie vorher habe ich diese Quilttechnik benutzt und mußte sie unbedingt testen bevor ich sie für 1 m großen Quilt unsetzte. Eine von meiner Quiltfreundinnen hat mir eine brandneue Superidee gegeben: anstatt vom bloßen Testsandwich eine Testtasche zu machen. Das Testen dauerte eine ganze Woche, aber am Ende lohnte es sich.

E After the quilt top "Nearly" was finished I urgently needed to make the quilting test: I wanted to try the spiral quilting with the walking foot. It didn't seem to be very difficult but still I couldn't risk to ruin the indispensable fabric squares with a clumsy quilting. It all meant: to make a test sandwich and to quilt it. My quilt friend gave me a new and brilliant idea of making a test bag instead of just a test sandwich. It took me another week but I think it was worth it.

the quilt "Nearly"

D Anstatt von meinen quasi-kaleidoskopischen Quadraten habe ich Stoffquadrate aus derselben Stofflinie Josefin genommen. Das Patchworkmuster des Quilts habe ich für die Tasche verkleinert sodass die Quadrate 5x5 cm groß waren. Nun hatte ich nicht eine sondern 2 Panele zum Quilten - Vorder- und Rückseite der Tasche:

E Instead of nearly caleidoscopic squares I took for the bag plain squares of IKEA fabrics from the same Josefin fabric line. I scaled down the quilt pattern so the squares for the bag are 2 x 2 ".And then I had actually 2 test panels - the front and the back side of the bag:

D Warum eine Woche für so ein einspruchloses Muster? Ich wollte dass die Tasche minimalistisch wie der Quilt selbst blieb, deswegen habe ich mich jede Kleinigkeit gründlich überlegt.  Ich wollte etwas was beinahe als einfache Einkaufstasche aussah und ich denke nicht dass es mir gelungen ist.

E How could such a primitive pattern take the whole week? I wanted to stay as minimalist as possible and thought over every part and every fragment to make it more plain and simple - like a plain and simple tote bag. I don't think I succeeded in it:

D Weiß ist keine gute Farbe für eine Einkaufstasche, aber für Testziele mußte der Stoff genau das Gleiche sein wie beim Quilt.  Die Tasche ist maschinenwaschbar, was mich mit dem Weiß einigermaßen versöhnt.

E The off-white fabric is just the same fabric I used for the quilt (don't forget it was a test). Not very practical for a tote, but at least it's machine washable.

The Little Village bag

D  Diese Tasche habe ich im September 2014 gemacht, habe jedoch volkommen vergessen, sie hier zu zeigen. Nun korrigiere ich diesen Fehler.

Es gab eine neue Challenge in meiner Taschengruppe. Zu dieser Zeit war ich nicht sicher, ob ich überhaupt in der Gruppe bleibe. Dann dachte ich: eine Tasche mit Häusern (das war gerade das Thema der Challenge) kann frau immer gebrauchen und fing an meinen Minidorf zu kreiieren. Als Material habe ich endlich unzahlige abgeschnittene Hemdenärmel genommen, die ich mal von einer Näherin geschenkt bekommen hatte:

E I've made this bag in September 2014, but quite forgot to show it. Better late than never, so I'll show it now.

There was another Challenge in out bag group. It was a hard time for me, I really thought about leaving the group. But then again, every quilter and every bag lady should have a bag with houses (that was the theme of the challenge - "Hauses"), so I decided to make one for me. The fabric choice was quite obvious for me: I took the numerous cut off shirt sleeves I got from a seamstress:

 
D  Ich habe einige kleine Häuserblöcke in CorelDraw gezeichnet, ausgedruckt und dann ging mein Rechner plötzlich und endgültig kaputt. Zwei Wochen lebte ich ohne Computer, ohne Internet (das wäre an sich nicht so schlimm),ohne CorelDraw, ohne nichts. Und die Challenge konnte nicht warten. Ich musste also das Schnittmuster für die Tasche von Hand zeichnen. In 3facher Ausführung auf alle Fälle. Eine Affenarbeit war es, jawohl:

E I made some paper piecing templates for the houses in CorelDraw, printed them out and then my computer was at once and forever dead. More than 2 week I lived without the computer, without the internet (that's not so bad per se), without my CorelDraw. And the deadline for the challenge was coming. So I had to draw the bag patterns by hand! Three copies. And I'm not a drawing person.

D  Als Anhänger für Reißverschlüsse habe ich Hemdenknöpfe verwendet. Und aus Manschetten Schlaufen für die Karabinerhaken gemacht. Das Futter ist auch aus den Ärmeln:

E I used the shirt buttons for zip pullers and made the loops for the snap hooks. The lining is from the sleeves too:
