Constructivism for a Bag Maker

D Die letzte Taschenchallenge in meiner Taschengruppe hieß "Tasche als/wie Kunstwerk". Die Aufgabe war Tasche zu kreieren die von einem Gemälde, einem Künstler oder einer Stilrichtung inspiriert wurde.  Da ich überhaupt nicht malen kann, konnte ich nicht viele Kunststile in die engere Auswahl ziehen: weder Impresionismus noch Expressionismus noch andere schöne Dinge. Mir blieb nur die Schönheit der Geometrie übrig. Und was gibt's geometrischer als der Konstruktivismus, das Stil von Rotchenko, Tatlin und El Lissitzky, das Stil, der noch abstrakter und geometrischer als Bauhaus ist. Ich habe Recherche gemacht und kam zum folgenden Schluss: einfache Grundformen, einfache Farben und  deren gegenstandlose rein harmonische Zusammensetzung - das alles kann ich selber machen ohne künstlerische Vorlage.

E And there was a new bag challenge in my bag group and the theme was "A Bag as a Work of Art". We'd have to make a bag or purse, of any size, matherial and purpose, that reproduces or resembles a real painting. As for me, I'm most definitely not  a painting person. So neither classicism nor impressionism nor anything of that kind - except geometry. And the best examples of the geometric art are in the avant-garde - Bauhaus, constructivism, suprematism as the essence of it. Rodchenko, Lissitzky and Tatlin, you know.  I've made researches and decided that simple basic forms, simple basic colors and a simple layout are things that I can arrange all by myself.

D Hier ist das Ergebnis meiner Studie. Die Tasche ist eher das Täschen: die ist 11 x 17 x 3 cm groß. Die Stoffe sind IKEA-Unis.

E Here is the result of me being a suprematist. It's a rather small purse (11 x 17 x 3 cm), all the fabrics are IKEA solids.

D Es war nicht einfach, einen Kontrastfarbenen Reißverschluss rundum einzunähen. Ich habe schon in diesem Bereich einige Erfahrungen gesammelt und die waren nicht gut. Diesmal habe ich Kontrollpunkte sowohl auf beiden Taschenteilen als auch auf dem Seitenteil mit dem RSV sorgfältig markiert und immer vom Punkt zum Punkt zusammengenäht. Diese Technik erwies sich als anstrengend aber wirksam: 

 

E One of the most challenging part of the purse was an outer zipper. I've got some bad experience already, so this time I tried to learn from my mistakes. I've carefully marked all pivot points both on the purse panels and the zipper part (8 points on every panel) and sewn strictly from point to point. It worked really good:

D Der wahre Konstruktivismus ist in der Tasche versteckt, weil das nicht nur noch eine Tasche ist, sondern ein Strick-Organizer! Die geometrische Formen aus der äußeren Seite verwandeln sich in die Innenfächer:

E The real constructivism begins inside, for the purse isn't just a purse - it's my new knitting organiser. The geometric shapes from the surface were slightly transformed to form inside pockets:

D Der weiße Hintergrund ist zwar nicht besonders praktisch, jedoch obligatorisch für eine Amateurkonstruktivistin.

Ich habe die Tasche schon getestet und finde sie einfach perfekt.

E The white background is not very practical, but as a makeshift constructivist I had no choice.

Bits of Physics and Mathematics for Quilters

D Es passiert nicht viel quiltiges in meiner realen (nicht virtuellen) Nachbarshaft. Umso mehr freute ich mich auf die Möglichkeit, an einer Challenge teilzunehmen mit dem Namen
"Color Brings Diversity to Life" - "Farbe macht das Leben bunter", sozusagen.
Jede Teilnehmerin bekam ein 25 x 25 cm großes Quadrat des Challengestoffes:

E There are not so many quilt events in my real (not virtual) neighbourhood. The more happy I was to take part in a challenge "Color Brings Diversity to Life". I've got the 10" square of the obligatory fabric:

D Die Aufgabe war die Anfertigung eines Wandbehanges mit diesem Thema, dabei soll der Challengestoff im Quilt  erkennbar sein.

Meine erste Idee war, das Muster für meine schwarz-weiße Tasche weiterzuentwickeln. Im Nu hatte ich einen sehr frei geschnittenen Log-Cabin-Block gemacht, dünne farbige Strahlen draufappliziert, fertig war der Quilt. Da ich ein Riesenfan von "The Big Bang Theory" bin (die Serie, nicht die Urknalltheorie, obwohl die Theorie auch), habe ich den Quilt "The Little Big Bang" genannt. Hier ist die erste Version:

E The participants had to make a small wall hanging depicting the theme from above and using a recognizable amount of the fabric.

My first idea was to make a modified and maybe improved version of the pattern from my black and white bag. It was made quickly: a very free-hand curved log cabin + some colorful "rays". Under the influense of my favorite "The Big Bang Theory" (I mean the TV series, not a physical theory. But then again, the theory too) I've called the quilt "The Little Big Bang". Here is the first version:

D Nicht schlecht - abgesehen vom Binding. Die Einfassung gefiel mir gar nicht. Aber zu dieser Zeit hatte ich schon die Idee für den nächsten "physikalischen" Quilt mit einem Rest des Challengestoffes.
Ich legte den 1. Quilt vorübergehend beiseite and fing mit Nummer zwei an


E It was not bad except for the binding - I didn't like it at all. But at that time I had already an idea for the next nearly physical quilt. I put the first one aside and started the Experiment #2.

D Sorry fürs schlechte Foto, habe ich in meinem Nähzimmer am Abend bei meiner normalen Beleuchtung gemacht. (Und ich muss jeden Abend bei solchem Licht nähen!). Zu der Zeit waren es nur monochrome Löcher. Der farbige Hintergrund kam später und so entstand der Quilt "Farbige Schwarze Löcher": 

E Sorry for the poor photo, it was made at the evening in my working room (and I have to sew by that light every day night!)  It's just the holes by then, without color. Later on I added the background layer and now it calls "Colorful Black Holes" and looks like this:

D Nachdem Nr. 2 ohne Einfassung vorlag, war mir endgültig klar, dass auch bei der Nr. 1 die schwarze Einfassung weg sollte. Hier ist also die letzte Version vom "The Little Big Bang":

E After the finishing of the second quilt it was completely clear to me that the first one doesn't need any binding at all. So I ripped off the black binding and finished the "The Little Big Bang" without a binding:

D Nun hatte ich zwar keinen Challengestoff mehr, dafür aber einige weitere Ideen für "wissentschaftliche" schwarz-weiße Quilts. Deswegen bestellte ich noch ein Quadrat vom Challengestoff und fing mit dem nächsten Quilt an. Ursprünglich sollte der Name "Geordnetes Chaos" lauten. Zuerst habe ich einen (fast) schwarz-weißen Hintergrund gemacht:

E Now all the challenge fabric was gone, but I still couldn't stop producing new black and white ideas. So I've got another piece of the fabric and started the next quilt. I already knew its name - "The Ordered Chaos". I printed out the cutting pattern and  made an almost black and white background:

D Es sollte eine Art Verschnitttechnik mit zusätzlichen farbigen Dreiecken sein. Beim Zusammennähen habe ich jedoch bemerkt, dass der Quilt nicht besonders chaotisch wirkte. Die Fibonacci-Folge besiegte das Chaos:

E But as the piecing went further I noticed that the quilt doesn't want to be very chaotic. The order, represented by the Fibonacchi sequence, defeated the chaos:

D Der Quilt heißt nun "Fibonacci Study". Wieder ohne Einfassung.

E  Da ich noch ein Stückchen vom Challengestoff übrig hatte, mußte ich noch einen Quilt machen. Diesmal versuchte ich wieder, Voronoi Diagramm in einem Quilt einzusetzen (der 1. Versuch war die Voronoi-Tasche hier). Hier kommt "Voronoi Study #2":

Now it's called "Fibonacci Study" and finished without a binding too.

Since I still had a piece of the challenge fabric I had to make another quilt. It was my 2nd approach to the beautiful mathematical object - Voronoi diagrams (the first one was the Voronoi bag here). Here comes "Voronoi Study #2":

D Technisch gesehen ist der Quilt der Tasche sehr ähnlich, nur das Voronoi-Diagramm und die Stoffe sind anders.

E Technically, the quilt is very similar to the bag, it's the Voronoi diagram and the fabrics that differ. Without a binding either.

D Ich habe alle ausgeschnittene orangefarbene Stoffstücke fürs Spätere aufgehoben - vielleicht eine neue Tasche?

E This time I preserved all cut out orange pieces with the purpose of making another quilt:

D Somit war der Stoff beinahe verbraucht. So sehen alle vier Quilts zusammen aus:

E By now, I've used almost all challenge fabric. There are all four quilt together:

Blogger's Quilt Festival: Voronoi Study #2

I made this quilt for a challenge "Color Brings Diversity to Life". To be exact, I made four quilts for this challenge and this is one of them.

The spots/holes/cells on the quilt are not random, they build a Voronoi diagram. Recently I've discovered this most interesting mathematical object and I'm still in awe about it! I've told about Voronoi diagrams in my previous post with a Voronoi bag (I love that bag!). Shortly: "The Voronoi diagram is a special partitioning of a plane: if there's a given set of points (called generators or seeds) then for each seed there is a corresponding region consisting of all points closer to that seed than to any other. "

The bottom layer is just black and white scraps thrown over the interfacing and densely quilted with rather nonparallel lines. The quilting prevents exposed edges of fabrics from fraying. The black fabric with irregular white polka dots is our challenge fabric.

The top layer is  a kind of "whole-cloth raw-edge appliquee" - it's a piece of orange batik fabric, the edges of Voronoi regions were topstitched with narrow zigzag stitch, then the holes were cautiously cut out trying not to damage the bottom layer.

I've kept all cut out orange pieces and pinned them on the pattern sheet for using them later on for another bag or quilt:

Roses by accident

D  Während der Vorbereitung auf mein Origami-Workshop  habe ich u.A. entdeckt, dass nicht nur Quadrat, sondern auch andere gleichkantige Figuren sich für diese Falttechnik eignen. Zum Beispiel ein Dreieck: da entsteht ein Muster aus gedrehten kleineren Dreiecken. Oder ein Sechseck -  in diesem Fall sehen aber innere Hexagons ziemlich uninteressant aus. Aber wenn man den Innenteil eines gefalteten Hexagons von der linken Seite des Stoffes vorsichtig dreht, entsteht eine schöne Rose:

E While preparing for a fabric origami class I've discover for myself many interesting things. Such as: you can take another equilateral base polygon instead of a square and get another twisted block, like a triangle in a triangle for an equilateral triangle base. A hexagon in a hexagon looks rather boring, but if you turn it over and pull out the excess fabric from the wrong side and twist it, you'll get a nice rose:

D  Diese neuerworbene Kenntnis habe ich sofort in eine Tasche umgesetzt:
E I used the newly asquired knowledge for making a purse:

D  Der Hauptstoff ist schon wieder ein recycelter Regenschirm. Die Rosen sind aus den abgeschnittenen Hemdenärmeln.
E The main fabric is a recycled umbrella, the roses are from the cut off shirt sleeves.

D  Wie immer habe ich noch ein bißchen free-motion quilting  geübt indem ich auf dem Boden Rosen gequiltet habe. Ich habe das Muster von Lori Kennedy etwas geändert, sodass ich es ohne Absetzen quilten konnte:

E I practised my free motion quilting skill on the bag bottom. I slightly altered this pattern of Lori Kennedy  to make it continuous:

D  Zufälligerweise erinnert sich die Tasche an eine sehr bekannte japanische Tasche mit Origami-Röschen. So eine quasi-japanisch aussehende Tasche benötigte auch "japanische" Taschengriffe, die ich aus dem Futterstoff geflochten habe. Noch eine kleinere gefaltete Rose ziert den Reißverschluss:

E It's just a coincidence that the bag looks very similar to a well-known japanese bag with origami roses. Such a pseudo-japanese bag needed japanese handles too. I braided mine from the lining fabric. Another smaller origami rose embellishes the zipper tab:

D  Da Stofforigami reine Geometrie ist, habe ich die Tasche für die neue Challenge "Geometrie" in meiner Taschengruppe eingereicht. Dies war aber kein geplanter Beitrag zur Challenge. Von einer Tasche, die ich speziell für diese Challenge gemacht habe, erzähle ich im nächsten Post.

Africa Tote Bag

D Der Quilt Afrika war äußerst schwer. Ich meine, er wog eine Tonne und war kaum unter dem Maschinenfuß zu bewegen. Ganz von den unzahligen Jeansnähten zu schweigen. Es was völlig unmöglich, ihn mit free-motion quilting zu quilten. Ich mußte also ein Quiltmuster für den Onertransporter ausdenken und es auf jeden Fall vorher testen. Laut meiner neuen Richtlinie startete ich sofort mit einer Testtasche anstatt vom Testsandwich.

Die gequilteten "Felder" sind Fortsetzungen und Erweiterungen der Straßen aus einem der Stoffstücke:

E  The Africa quilt was really heavy and consisted mostly of seam allowances. It prevented me completely from the free motion quilting and returned me to the old good walking foot. And I had to make the quilting test first. And again I decided to make a test bag, not just a test quilt.

Here it is. The quilting lines continue the pattern from one of the fabrics:

D Innerhalb von "Feldern" habe ich noch die "Rillen" gequiltet. Die Rillen gibt's auf dem Quilt nicht: eine Sache ist, eine relativ kleine Tasche unterm Maschinenfuß zu drehen und ganz Andere, den 120x120 cm großen Quilt. Ich habe lediglich die "Felder" geschafft.

E As you can see, I wanted to quilt not just "fields"; but a kind of furrows inside the fields. It worked for the bag, but the quilt was still too heavy even for such straight-line furrows.

D Erst nach der Umfassung des Quitls mit supertollem Mandarinorange habe ich die Tasche fertiggemacht.

E I decorated the bag with the same gorgeous mandarin orange color I took for the binding of a quilt:

D Im Grunde ist es eine Einkaufstüte. Die unteren Ecken sind abgenäht, die Tasche ist gefuttert und hat ein Innenfach mit Reißverschluss. Nur die Form ist mal anders.

E Actually, the bag is a slightly improved version of a darted tote bag, with lining and a zipped inside pocket. It's just the slanted form that makes the difference.

D Die tolle Farbe entspricht seht genau der Farbe des Auto auf dem Foto unten. Es ist nicht mein Auto! Die Tasche links auf der Bank:

E I've found this car staying nearby. It's not mine. But the color matches perfectly to the bag:

My version of Africa

D  Diesjährige Challenge der Heidelberger Patchworkgilde  war "Afrika". Nicht gerade mein Thema, abes in Moment gbit es kein großes Angebot an Challenges in der Nähe. Andererseits, schon einige Jahre lagen bei mir einige Fat Quarters - ein Geschenk von meiner Quiltfreindin aus Afrika. Jetzt oder nie, sagte ich zu mir und fing an zu grübeln.

E The annual challenge in the quilt guild of Heidelberg was to make an african-themed quilt.  It's not exactly my theme but there aren's many quilt challenges nearby either. Then again, several years ago a quilt friend of mine sent me a bunch of african fabrics, so "now or never", I thought and started to create something out of it.

D  Zuerst machte ich eine Skizze in CorelDraw. Der Quilt sollte ca. 120 x 120 cm groß sein.
E First of all there was a CorelDraw project with a real size fabric pieces:

D  Das war meine erste beste Idee mit den Stoffen. Eine Woche wartete ich ab und hoffte, dass noch andere bessere Ideen kommen. Leider vergeblich. Mir blieb nicht anders übrig als mit diesem Layout anzufangen.

E It was the very first idea I had with those fabrics. For about a week I struggled with myself trying to think up something different, but then I gave up and took this layout.

D  Den Hintergrund bastelte ich auch Jeansreste und dann maschinell applizierte afrikanische Streifen mit unsichbarem Garn darauf. Ich quiltete alles mit dem Obertransporter, denn wegen des gewichts des Quilts und der unzahligen Nähten war vom Free-motion quilting nicht zu denken. Ich knotete die Oberfläche mit  farbige Knoten und fasste den Quilt mit schönem Sicherheitswestenorange um.

E I appliqueed african stripes on this background with an invisible thread and quilted the whole with a walking foot. It was a challenge by itself due to heavy weight of denim and numerous seams. Then I tyed the quilt with contrast (but matching) colours and binded it with beautiful red orange fabric.

D  Übrigens: was das Quiltmuster betrifft. Ich musste unbedingt das Quilten vorher testen. Was aus diesem Teststück wurde, erfahren Sie im nächsten Post.

E By the way, the quilting pattern. I had to test it on a scrap before to start quilting the quilt. In the next post I'll tell you what happened with that test piece.

My star block in Houston!

D  Im Juni 2014 habe ich meinen Stern für die Astronomical Quilt Challenge genäht und in die USA verschickt. Bis November wartete ich gespannt auf die Ergebnisse. Endlich ist der Houston Quilt Festival 2014 eröffnet, endlich erscheinen erste Fotos der Sternquilts (es gab natürlich mehrere Quilts, da es wurde mehr als 2000 Blöcke aus aller Welt fürs Projekt gemacht). Mein Block ist noch nicht da.

E It was a great pleasure for me to make a block for the Astronomical Quilt Challenge. I've made it in June 2014 and couldn't wait to see all blocks at Houston Quilt Festival in November. At last there were first photos of the Astronomical Quilts with the astronaut Karen Nyberg standing by, but my star wasn't there.

 D  Ich warte ab, es kommen immer neue Fotos, wieder ohne meinen Stern. Ich fange schon an zu denken, dass mein Block verloren ging... Und dann entdecke ich mein Sternchen  ganz zufällig in der unteren Reihe eines Quilts (zufällig, da diese Reihe nicht auf den Thumbnails zu sehen ist):

E I waited and waited, other quilts appeared, without my block either... I staredt to think than the block wasn't delivered at all and then found it by accident at the bottom of one of the quilts:

D Ich kann zumindest sicher sein, dass mein Block angekommen ist; - sagte ich zu mir. Nicht der beste Ort für meinen Stern, aber auch dort musste  einen Stern sein, sagte ich zu mir. Dabei beneidete ich ein bißchen denjenigen, deren Blöcke, z.b. auf dem Quilt mit Karens Block waren.
In Wirklichkeit aber sollte ich nicht zu früh traurig sein, denn es kamen weitere Fotos. Unter Anderen gab es dieses Bild auf Twitter: Karen Nyberg in einem Rahmen aus Quiltblöcken und meiner ist da, in der Ecke links oben:

E A good news: so they got my block. Not the perfect location, but there had to be a block there too, - I said to myself , feeling slightly envious of those at the quilt with Karen's block.
Actually I should have no reason for envy. For I found on Twitter another picture of Karen Nyberg - with my star! In the top left corner:

D Also ich freue mich sehr. Die Astronomical Quilt Challenge" war eine brilliante und seltene Gelegenheit und ich bin stolz dass ich mit dabei war.

E So I'm very very happy. "Stellar quilt" project war really a rare and brilliant idea and I'm proud to have been a part of it.

My star block for The Astronomical Quilt

D  Ich bin absolut begeistert für den Astronomical Quilt Projekt von Karen Nyberg, Austronautin und Quilterin. Selbstverständlich bin ich dabei! Und das passende Sternmuster habe ich parat: ich brauchte nur einen Block von meinem Stellation quilt zu der in den Teilnahmebedingungen angegebenen Größe 9 1/2" zu verkleinern:

E I'm totally fascinated with the astronomical quilt project. Of course I'm in! And the block choice was rather easy for me: I simply took one of the star polyhedra from my Stellation quilt  - the small stellated dodekahedron - and made a smaller copy of it according to the required block size 9 1/2":

D  Die Sterne für den Quilt habe ich traditionell gepatcht, d.h. mit Schablonen, angezeichneten Nahtlinien und von Hand. Es hat  alles wunderbar geklappt von den Nahtzugaben abgesehen: das Bügeln war ein Horror, die NZ wollten auf keinen Fall richtig liegen. Aus diesem Grund habe ich für den kleineren Block keine Experimente durchgeführt und habe ihn mit English Paper Piecing gemacht mit vollem Erfolg.

E For the quilt I've used the traditional piecing - with templates, seam lines and hand sewing. It came out very well apart from the pressing of seam allowances: despite all efforts it was a terrible mess. So the smaller version was made in english paper piecing technique and there were no problems at all.

D  Heute habe ich meinen Block versandt und hoffe, dass es auf dem Houston Quiltfestival, wo den Astronomical Quilt (oder vielleicht Quilts) präsentiert wird, mein Sternchen unter mehreren anderen Sternen nicht verloren geht.

E Today I've sent away my block and my best wishes. The astronomical quilt (or maybe quilts) is to be seen at Houston quilt show and my little geometrical object will be there too, a star amongst stars.

Iguana bag

 D  Die letzte Taschenchallenge in meiner Lieblingstaschengruppe hieß ANIMALity. Keine leichte Aufgabe für eine geometrische Quilterin wie ich. Aber ich hab's geschafft! Hier ist die kürzere Geschichte.

E There was another challenge called  ANIMALity in my beloved bag group. Again it was a hard task for a geometrical quilter like me. But I did it! Here's the story.

It's the logo, literally ANIMALity - Das ist unser Logo, buchstäblich "ANIMALity"

D  In die engere Auswahl habe ich weder Katzen noch Eulen gezogen. Dafür überlegte ich mich ernst, ob ich ein Erdferkel, einen Ameisenbär oder ein Chameleon nehmen soll. Die Rechercehn im Internet haben mir ein sehr schönes Erdferkel aus Papier, ein paar lustige Chameleons und einige putzigen Amöben gebracht. Dann habe ich einen Leguan gefunden und eine endgültige Entscheidung getroffen:

E There were neither cats nor owls in my short list of animals. Instead, I had to choose between an aardvark, an anteater and a chameleon. I've found already a very nice specimen of paper aardvark and some funny chameleons and some cute amoebae and then an iguana that made my day:

D  Als Erstes habe ich ein Probestück gemacht:: einfaches free-motion quilting auf einem billegen Baumwollstoff. (Noch vor einigen Monaten hätte ich das free-motion quilting nie als einfach bezeichnet). Während dieses Tests hat sich ein Hintergrungquiltmuster entwickelt:

E First, I've made a test lizard on a piece of cheap cotton: it's simply free-motion embroidery/quilting (it was not sooo simply several month ago). Meanwhile, a backgroung quilting pattern arose.

D  Alle Teile des Tieres habe ich aus einem einzigen Stück handgefärbten Stoff von Gabriele Tisch geschnitten und auf den gepatchten Hintergrund in Erdfarben maschinell aufappliziert. Dann habe ich Taschenteile dicht gequiltet; da die Teile ungeachtet vom Thermolam und dem Quilten immer noch nicht stabil genug waren, habe ich sie mit dem aufgebügelten Decovil Light verstärkt (die Ergebnisse jedoch lassen zu wünschen übrig).

Ausnahmsweise habe ich echte lederne Taschengriffe gekauft - normalerweise mache ich die Griffe selber aus Stoff, aber nicht in dem Fall. Und so sieht die fertige Leguantasche aus:

E I've cut the parts of the beast out of single piece of hand dyed fabric from Gabriele Tisch  and machine appliqueed it on the pieced background in earth tones. I've dencely quilted it and  used Decovil stabiliser to make the bag parts surdier (although I'm not very happy with the results.)

As an exception I've bought leather bag handles - normally I make the fabric ones myself, but not in this case. You can see how it's turned out.
