Blogger's Quilt Festival: Voronoi Study #2

I made this quilt for a challenge "Color Brings Diversity to Life". To be exact, I made four quilts for this challenge and this is one of them.

The spots/holes/cells on the quilt are not random, they build a Voronoi diagram. Recently I've discovered this most interesting mathematical object and I'm still in awe about it! I've told about Voronoi diagrams in my previous post with a Voronoi bag (I love that bag!). Shortly: "The Voronoi diagram is a special partitioning of a plane: if there's a given set of points (called generators or seeds) then for each seed there is a corresponding region consisting of all points closer to that seed than to any other. "

The bottom layer is just black and white scraps thrown over the interfacing and densely quilted with rather nonparallel lines. The quilting prevents exposed edges of fabrics from fraying. The black fabric with irregular white polka dots is our challenge fabric.

The top layer is  a kind of "whole-cloth raw-edge appliquee" - it's a piece of orange batik fabric, the edges of Voronoi regions were topstitched with narrow zigzag stitch, then the holes were cautiously cut out trying not to damage the bottom layer.

I've kept all cut out orange pieces and pinned them on the pattern sheet for using them later on for another bag or quilt:

Africa Tote Bag

D Der Quilt Afrika war äußerst schwer. Ich meine, er wog eine Tonne und war kaum unter dem Maschinenfuß zu bewegen. Ganz von den unzahligen Jeansnähten zu schweigen. Es was völlig unmöglich, ihn mit free-motion quilting zu quilten. Ich mußte also ein Quiltmuster für den Onertransporter ausdenken und es auf jeden Fall vorher testen. Laut meiner neuen Richtlinie startete ich sofort mit einer Testtasche anstatt vom Testsandwich.

Die gequilteten "Felder" sind Fortsetzungen und Erweiterungen der Straßen aus einem der Stoffstücke:

E  The Africa quilt was really heavy and consisted mostly of seam allowances. It prevented me completely from the free motion quilting and returned me to the old good walking foot. And I had to make the quilting test first. And again I decided to make a test bag, not just a test quilt.

Here it is. The quilting lines continue the pattern from one of the fabrics:

D Innerhalb von "Feldern" habe ich noch die "Rillen" gequiltet. Die Rillen gibt's auf dem Quilt nicht: eine Sache ist, eine relativ kleine Tasche unterm Maschinenfuß zu drehen und ganz Andere, den 120x120 cm großen Quilt. Ich habe lediglich die "Felder" geschafft.

E As you can see, I wanted to quilt not just "fields"; but a kind of furrows inside the fields. It worked for the bag, but the quilt was still too heavy even for such straight-line furrows.

D Erst nach der Umfassung des Quitls mit supertollem Mandarinorange habe ich die Tasche fertiggemacht.

E I decorated the bag with the same gorgeous mandarin orange color I took for the binding of a quilt:

D Im Grunde ist es eine Einkaufstüte. Die unteren Ecken sind abgenäht, die Tasche ist gefuttert und hat ein Innenfach mit Reißverschluss. Nur die Form ist mal anders.

E Actually, the bag is a slightly improved version of a darted tote bag, with lining and a zipped inside pocket. It's just the slanted form that makes the difference.

D Die tolle Farbe entspricht seht genau der Farbe des Auto auf dem Foto unten. Es ist nicht mein Auto! Die Tasche links auf der Bank:

E I've found this car staying nearby. It's not mine. But the color matches perfectly to the bag:

My version of Africa

D  Diesjährige Challenge der Heidelberger Patchworkgilde  war "Afrika". Nicht gerade mein Thema, abes in Moment gbit es kein großes Angebot an Challenges in der Nähe. Andererseits, schon einige Jahre lagen bei mir einige Fat Quarters - ein Geschenk von meiner Quiltfreindin aus Afrika. Jetzt oder nie, sagte ich zu mir und fing an zu grübeln.

E The annual challenge in the quilt guild of Heidelberg was to make an african-themed quilt.  It's not exactly my theme but there aren's many quilt challenges nearby either. Then again, several years ago a quilt friend of mine sent me a bunch of african fabrics, so "now or never", I thought and started to create something out of it.

D  Zuerst machte ich eine Skizze in CorelDraw. Der Quilt sollte ca. 120 x 120 cm groß sein.
E First of all there was a CorelDraw project with a real size fabric pieces:

D  Das war meine erste beste Idee mit den Stoffen. Eine Woche wartete ich ab und hoffte, dass noch andere bessere Ideen kommen. Leider vergeblich. Mir blieb nicht anders übrig als mit diesem Layout anzufangen.

E It was the very first idea I had with those fabrics. For about a week I struggled with myself trying to think up something different, but then I gave up and took this layout.

The denim improv background

D  Den Hintergrund bastelte ich auch Jeansreste und dann maschinell applizierte afrikanische Streifen mit unsichbarem Garn darauf. Ich quiltete alles mit dem Obertransporter, denn wegen des gewichts des Quilts und der unzahligen Nähten war vom Free-motion quilting nicht zu denken. Ich knotete die Oberfläche mit  farbige Knoten und fasste den Quilt mit schönem Sicherheitswestenorange um.

E I appliqueed african stripes on this background with an invisible thread and quilted the whole with a walking foot. It was a challenge by itself due to heavy weight of denim and numerous seams. Then I tyed the quilt with contrast (but matching) colours and binded it with beautiful red orange fabric.

D  Übrigens: was das Quiltmuster betrifft. Ich musste unbedingt das Quilten vorher testen. Was aus diesem Teststück wurde, erfahren Sie im nächsten Post.

E By the way, the quilting pattern. I had to test it on a scrap before to start quilting the quilt. In the next post I'll tell you what happened with that test piece.

Iguana bag

 D  Die letzte Taschenchallenge in meiner Lieblingstaschengruppe hieß ANIMALity. Keine leichte Aufgabe für eine geometrische Quilterin wie ich. Aber ich hab's geschafft! Hier ist die kürzere Geschichte.

E There was another challenge called  ANIMALity in my beloved bag group. Again it was a hard task for a geometrical quilter like me. But I did it! Here's the story.

It's the logo, literally ANIMALity - Das ist unser Logo, buchstäblich "ANIMALity"

D  In die engere Auswahl habe ich weder Katzen noch Eulen gezogen. Dafür überlegte ich mich ernst, ob ich ein Erdferkel, einen Ameisenbär oder ein Chameleon nehmen soll. Die Rechercehn im Internet haben mir ein sehr schönes Erdferkel aus Papier, ein paar lustige Chameleons und einige putzigen Amöben gebracht. Dann habe ich einen Leguan gefunden und eine endgültige Entscheidung getroffen:

E There were neither cats nor owls in my short list of animals. Instead, I had to choose between an aardvark, an anteater and a chameleon. I've found already a very nice specimen of paper aardvark and some funny chameleons and some cute amoebae and then an iguana that made my day:

D  Als Erstes habe ich ein Probestück gemacht:: einfaches free-motion quilting auf einem billegen Baumwollstoff. (Noch vor einigen Monaten hätte ich das free-motion quilting nie als einfach bezeichnet). Während dieses Tests hat sich ein Hintergrungquiltmuster entwickelt:

E First, I've made a test lizard on a piece of cheap cotton: it's simply free-motion embroidery/quilting (it was not sooo simply several month ago). Meanwhile, a backgroung quilting pattern arose.

D  Alle Teile des Tieres habe ich aus einem einzigen Stück handgefärbten Stoff von Gabriele Tisch geschnitten und auf den gepatchten Hintergrund in Erdfarben maschinell aufappliziert. Dann habe ich Taschenteile dicht gequiltet; da die Teile ungeachtet vom Thermolam und dem Quilten immer noch nicht stabil genug waren, habe ich sie mit dem aufgebügelten Decovil Light verstärkt (die Ergebnisse jedoch lassen zu wünschen übrig).

Ausnahmsweise habe ich echte lederne Taschengriffe gekauft - normalerweise mache ich die Griffe selber aus Stoff, aber nicht in dem Fall. Und so sieht die fertige Leguantasche aus:

E I've cut the parts of the beast out of single piece of hand dyed fabric from Gabriele Tisch  and machine appliqueed it on the pieced background in earth tones. I've dencely quilted it and  used Decovil stabiliser to make the bag parts surdier (although I'm not very happy with the results.)

As an exception I've bought leather bag handles - normally I make the fabric ones myself, but not in this case. You can see how it's turned out.

IKEA Miracle of Denim II: without IKEA or denim

D Die Tasche  IKEA - Miracle of Denim  ist mir so gut gelungen dass ich eine Einladung bekam, einen Kurs über sie zu machen. Für den Kurs habe ich eine neue Version der Tasche gemacht, Leider habe ich Stoffbedarf  fasch auskalkuliert und enttäuscht entdeckt, dass ich nicht genug Hauptstoff habe. Zum Glück gab es immer noch genug Stoff um einen gepatchten Taschentop zu machen. Was ich auch gemacht habe.

Ich mag schwarz-weiße Stoffe über alles, aber oft brauchen sie meiner Meinung nach einige Farbakzente. Ich habe schmale bunte Streifen auf den Zeitungsstoff aufgebügelt und dann auf der gesamten Oberfläche breite Zigzacklinien als Strahlen gestickt, dabei die Stoffstreifen befestigt und gleichzeitig den Quiltsandwich gequiltet.

Nach der Kampf mit den Reißverschlussen, Schnallen und Riemen (wir sind ständig im Kampfzustand) war die Tasche fertig. So sieht sie aus:

E The bag IKEA - Miracle of Denim had such a great success that I was asked to make a workshop on it. For the workshop I've made another version of the bag out of the fabrics of the shop owner. Unfortunately, I've miscalculated the fabric amount and got not enough of focus fabric (black and white newspaper pattern). But there was still enough fabric to make a pieced bag top. So I've made a kind of irregular sawtooth stripe to join the black and the printed fabric..

I just love black and white fabrics, but as for me they often need a touch of color. I've added some narrow strips of bright batiks: fused them on the newspaper fabric and then secured them and at the same time quilted the surface with wide zigzag lines through all layers of quilt sandwich.

After several minor difficulties with the closure, zippers and handles (I always have difficulties with them) all the parts took their place and now the bag looks like this:

D Als Zierstoff habe ich noch ein Fat Eight von einem schwarzgepunkteten Stoff bekommen, der ist am oberen Rand auf der Innenseite der Tasche zu sehen.
E Forgot to say, I've got a fat eight of black dotted fabric, you can see it inside the bag at the opening.

D Das ist die einzige Aufnahme wo man das Quilting des Taschenboden sehen kann.
E It's the only photo where the quilting of the black part is visible.

D Und auf diesem Foto sieht man fast alle Points der Tasche: spritzerförmige Applikation, ein Reißverschlussfach hinten,Zickzackpatchwork und die Riemen.

Orange Tree - Oranienbaum

D  Dies ist mein Quilt für die Internet-Challenge "Zwei Farben". Wir die Teilnehmerinnen haben 2 blind ausgewählten Farben bekommen und noch dazu ein Thema. Mein Thema war Der Baum und die Farben - weiß und gelb-orange. Sowohl das Thema als auch die Farben hatte ich sehr gern (das ist bei den Challenges nicht immer der Fall). Ich hatte schon vor,  IKEA-Unis aus meinen Vorräten zu nehmen  -  IKEA hat keinen Stoff in gelb-orange, nur orange und das fehlende Gelb wollte ich mit dem Sticken hinzufügen. Dann aber habe ich einen perfekten gelb-orangefarbener Batikstoff gefunden und für IKEA-Ditte blieb nur der Hintergrund übrig. Ich habe einen sehr schönen Baum im Internet gefunden, denn ich kann absolut nicht zeichnen. Und hier ist das Ergebnis.

E This quilt is my entry for a challenge "Two Colors". Not only the participants got two colors randomly choosed from a box of crayons - everyone´s got one word as the theme too. My random colors were white and yellow orange and my word was The Tree. A very good theme and nice colors too. At first I wanted to use my favorite IKEA Ditte fabrics in white and orange with a touch of yellow as embellishments (there is only orange Ditte, no yellow orange). But then I´ve found the perfect batic, exactly yellow orange. I still used IKEA Ditte as the white - it´s rather ecru, but who cares. I´ve found a very nice picture of a tree because I´m by no means a drawing person. And this is the result:

D  Zum ersten Mal habe ich ein neues (für mich) Markierungstool ausprobiert, nämlich Pilot Pen Frixion stift. Es war wie ein Wunder. Ich habe all die feinen Linien markiert und dann all die kleinsten Teile mit Vliesofix aufgebügelt. Natürlich sind die Linien verschwunden. Und dann ich werfe den Quilttop ins Tiefkühlfach und nach ein paar Stunden sind die Markierungen wieder da!

E I've used the Frixion disappearing pen for the first time and it was like a miracle! I've marked all the lines and then ironed on all tiny orange parts. Naturally, the lines disappeared. And then I threw the fabric in the freezer and after an hour the lines were there again so I've only had to quilt the marked lines (and beyond).

D  Alle Linien sind sorgfältig kopiert, kilometerlang!
 
E All lines are transferred onto fabric. So many of them.

D  Nach dem Bügeln sind sie weg. Und sie müssen noch gequiltet werden.
E After the ironing. All lines are disappeared. And I still need to quilt them.

D  Ein Tiefkühlwunder - die sind zurück! Ich bin ein Glückspilz. Nun bleibt mir nur das Quilten - Freude pur.
E A freezer miracle - the lines are back! Happy me! The rest was a pure pleasure to do.

Flamenco Fan Case II

D  Meine Tochter fängt allmählich an zu schätzen, was für ein Talent von Mutter sie hat. Ihr neues Täschchen für den Flamenco-Fächer gefiel ihr so sehr, dass sie mich gefragt hat, ob ich noch eins machen könnte - für ihre Flamencolehrerin, passend zu deren prachvollen Outfits; einmal im Dunkelgrün, einmal im Weiß. Natürlich konnte ich das tun, nur diesmal nicht so arbeitsaufwendig. Ich habe das Design und die Technik genommen, die ich schon mal für die Tasche "Blaue Rose" eingesetzt hatte., nur diesmal waren es schwarz-weisse; oder genauer gesagt, weiß-schwarze Stoffreste mit einer Rose im Rot und Dunkelgrün:

E It seems that my daughter really liked her new flamenco fan case. She liked it so much that she asked me if I could do another one - for her flamenco teacher, matching to her dance outfits - one in deep green, one in white. Of course I could, but not so time-consuming as the first one. I´ve taken my old design from the Blue Rose bag and made it in black and white (or rather white and black) with a red rose.

D  Zuerst habe ich den Hintergrund im Weiß-Schwarz gemacht, indem ich mehrere Rechtecke geschnitten und mit den umgeschlagenen Nahtzugaben auf einen Stück weißer Baumwollstoff (mein Lieblingsstoff IKEA-Ditte) aufgenäht habe. Dann habe ich die Rosenknospen und die grünen Blätter mithilfe von Vliesofix obendrauf aufgebügelt, dann die fehlenden Stiele und alle Umrisse maschinell frei gestickt.

So sieht die andere Seite aus:

E First of all I´ve made a background out of my white and black scraps: I´ve cut some rectangles, turned the seam allowances and sewn them onto a piece of plain white fabric (IKEA Ditte, my all time favorite). After that I´ve fused rosebuds and leaves and very arbitrarily machine embroidered all outlines and stems.

D Mein alles anderes als perfektes free motion quilting habe ich innendrin versteckt:

E This time I hid my (not yet) exquisite free motion quilting inside the purse:

D  Das war´s. Die Flamencolehrerin war mehr als zufrieden mit dem neuen Fächer-Etui.
E And that was it. And the flamenco teacher was really happy to get a new étui for her fan.

Capitania General: A door with yoyos

D  Erinnert ihr euch an meinen total gescheiterten Versuch, eine komplexe Arabesque zu quilten?  Nun kann ich erzählen wieso ich das Muster unbedingt brauchte.

Unsere neue Challenge in meiner (realen) Quiltgruppe hieß "Gates, Portals and Doorways". Auf der Suche nach Inspirationen habe ich mehrere Stunden im Internet verbracht und endlich etwas ganz besonderes gefunden. Zuerst zeige ich meine Kreation:

E Do you remember my failed attempt to quilt a complex arabesque pattern? That´s what I needen the pattern for.

The new challenge in our (real) quilt group was "Gates, Portals and Doorways - The Journey Begins Here". We´re supposed to make a quilt using traditional piecing plus appliquee plus at least one additional tehcnique. After many hours researching in the internet I´ve found something that I could use - me who cannot draw at all.

D  Eine traumhafte Tür in einer traumhaften Stadt Barcelona. Die wunderschöne Schlider könnte ich nicht genau nachmachen, aber ich habe mit Yoyos mein Bestes getan.

Eigentlich ist das kein Quilt sondern ein Kissenbezug, ein Geburtstagsgeschenk für meine Mutter:

E It´s a gorgeous door in the gorgeous city of Barcelona. I couldn´t do the shields very well, but I did my best with yoyos of different sizes. I´ve completely overlooked a part of terms about additional techniques (and about appliquee too), but happily the yoyos counted for both.

Actually it´s not a quilt, it´s a cushion, a birthday present for my mother:

D  Und was hat das alles mit dem Quiltmuster zu tun? Auf dem Foto ist das obere Teil derselben Tür:

D  Ich dachte, ich könnte ein anderes Kissen machen mit den goldenen Buchstaben, weiteren Yoyos und den gequilteten Schnörkeln. In Moment sieht es aber so aus, als ob ich ein wenig abwarten und mein free motion quilting noch mehr üben sollte.

E I thought about making another cushion with the golden letters, more yoyos and quilted swirls. But it seems to me now that I have to wait and  practice my free motion quilting skills.

The Yellow Submarine

D Es war eine neue Challenge in meiner virtuellen Taschengruppe. Diesmal hieß das Thema "Musikimprovisation" und schloß alles rund um die Musik ein:  Noten, Musikinstrumenten, Lieblingsmelodien, Pop- und Rockstars... alles. Nach einigen (mehreren) Tagen Recherchen im Internet habe ich es endlich gefunden: The Yellow Submarine! Es war ein altes Poster:

E There was a new challenge in our internet bag group. Our theme  was "Music Improvisation" and it should be literally all about music - we´ve got very nice and precise instructions to use our imagination and be creative. I ´ve been searching in the  internet several hours or days till I´ve found this vintage poster:

 

D Ich kaufe keine Patchworkstoffe (Recycling ist mir viel lieber), aber vor einigen Jahren habe ich Samples von den gestreiften Michael James-Stoffen  geschenkt bekommen. Die Streifen waren breit und die Stoffstücke relativ klein, deswegen konnte ich damit nichts anfangen - bis ich dieses Poster fand. Die wären doch perfekt als Hintergrundkorallen. Ich habe nur Unis fürs Submarine gekauft und los ging es. Mithilfe von Vliesofix habe ich alle gestreiften Teile aufeinander aufgebügelt und dann mit einem breitem dichtem Zickzackstich die Konturen nachbestickt. Das Submarine habe ich extra auf einem Stück Backpapier zusammengebastelt und auf den fertigen Meereshintergrund angebracht. Ein paar Sterne hinzugefügt. Danach brauchte ich nur die Teile zu quilten. zusammenzunähen,. Magnetverschlusse und den Riemen anzubringen und fertig ist The Yellow Submarine!

E This was a very good occasion to use at last my samples of striped fabrics of Michael James. The stripes were 1" bright and the fabric pieces not big, so I couldn't do anything with them. But now I thought they were perfect for the deep underwater background. I´ve fused striped forms on a plain white background and enclosed the edges with a satin stitch. I´ve made the submarine on a sheet of backing parchment and added it to the underwater background. Then I only had the bag to sew, it was not so difficult compared to the submarine itself.

D Bis zur letzten Minute wusste ich nicht genau, wo sollen die Magnetverschlusse hin. Deswegen habe ich sie nicht direkt an die Tasche, sondern an kleine Stücke mit Stoff überzogene Schabrakeneinlage angebracht. Dann lassen sie sich einfach wie Knöpfe annähen:

E I didn´t want to install magnetic snaps until the bag was completely done, since I didn´t know where to. So I´ve attached each of them to a small piece of a very sturdy interfacing covered with fabric and then simply sewn them onto place like buttons.
