My star block in Houston!

D  Im Juni 2014 habe ich meinen Stern für die Astronomical Quilt Challenge genäht und in die USA verschickt. Bis November wartete ich gespannt auf die Ergebnisse. Endlich ist der Houston Quilt Festival 2014 eröffnet, endlich erscheinen erste Fotos der Sternquilts (es gab natürlich mehrere Quilts, da es wurde mehr als 2000 Blöcke aus aller Welt fürs Projekt gemacht). Mein Block ist noch nicht da.

E It was a great pleasure for me to make a block for the Astronomical Quilt Challenge. I've made it in June 2014 and couldn't wait to see all blocks at Houston Quilt Festival in November. At last there were first photos of the Astronomical Quilts with the astronaut Karen Nyberg standing by, but my star wasn't there.

 D  Ich warte ab, es kommen immer neue Fotos, wieder ohne meinen Stern. Ich fange schon an zu denken, dass mein Block verloren ging... Und dann entdecke ich mein Sternchen  ganz zufällig in der unteren Reihe eines Quilts (zufällig, da diese Reihe nicht auf den Thumbnails zu sehen ist):

E I waited and waited, other quilts appeared, without my block either... I staredt to think than the block wasn't delivered at all and then found it by accident at the bottom of one of the quilts:

D Ich kann zumindest sicher sein, dass mein Block angekommen ist; - sagte ich zu mir. Nicht der beste Ort für meinen Stern, aber auch dort musste  einen Stern sein, sagte ich zu mir. Dabei beneidete ich ein bißchen denjenigen, deren Blöcke, z.b. auf dem Quilt mit Karens Block waren.
In Wirklichkeit aber sollte ich nicht zu früh traurig sein, denn es kamen weitere Fotos. Unter Anderen gab es dieses Bild auf Twitter: Karen Nyberg in einem Rahmen aus Quiltblöcken und meiner ist da, in der Ecke links oben:

E A good news: so they got my block. Not the perfect location, but there had to be a block there too, - I said to myself , feeling slightly envious of those at the quilt with Karen's block.
Actually I should have no reason for envy. For I found on Twitter another picture of Karen Nyberg - with my star! In the top left corner:

E So I'm very very happy. "Stellar quilt" project war really a rare and brilliant idea and I'm proud to have been a part of it.

Just another UFO finished!

D   Im Jahr 2005 habe ich einen Anfall von Recycling bekommen und habe einige alte Tischdecken zu einem sehr traditionellen und ziemlich langweiligen Quilttop verarbeitet. Ich war so weit dass ich schon das Handquilten angefangen und dann...

Vor ein paar Wochen habe ich eine Tüte mit dem Quilt wieder gefunden. Alle Handquiltstiche habe ich rausgenommen und den Quilt neu gequiltet, diesmal mit der Maschine. Nun sieht der Quilt so aus:

E It was 2005 when I decided to make some recycling and sewed a quite traditional  and quite boring quilt top out of old tablecloths in blue and white. I made a quilt sandwich, began to hand quilt it and then...

A few weeks ago I've found the aforementioned quilt again. After a close observation I rip off all the quilting (it was not so bad - the rows of punch holes were regular enough; I think it was just an inappropriate fabric for hand quilting) and machine quilt it. And so it looks like now:

D  Während der dunklen Jahren der Vergessenheit sind alle blau-weiße Tischdeckenreste spurlos verschwunden, sodass ich die Quilteinfassung mit dem Rückseitenstoff machen musste. Mein Rückenstoff war IKEA Ditte im Rot, deswegen habe ich das mangelnde Quilten mit Knoten aus roter Perlgarn vervollständigt.

E During the long period of doing nothing any remnants of blue and white tablecloths mysteriously disappeared so I had to make edge-turned binding while my backing was IKEA red. So I added matching red ties.

D  Nun weiß ich nicht, ob das Quilting dicht genug ist. Beim Vorbereiten dieses Blogposts habe ich meinen alten CorelDraw-Entwurf  mit dem kompletten Quiltmuster gefunden mehrere schöne Federn einschließlich. Vielleicht werde ich dem Quilt doch noch ein bißchen free-motion quilting hinzufügen. Vielleicht auch nicht.

E I don't know if it's quilted enough for now. Preparing this blog post I've found my old sketch in Corel Draw with the complete quilt pattern including feathers. Maybe I still have to make some free-motion quilting. Then again, maybe not.

My star block for The Astronomical Quilt

D  Ich bin absolut begeistert für den Astronomical Quilt Projekt von Karen Nyberg, Austronautin und Quilterin. Selbstverständlich bin ich dabei! Und das passende Sternmuster habe ich parat: ich brauchte nur einen Block von meinem Stellation quilt zu der in den Teilnahmebedingungen angegebenen Größe 9 1/2" zu verkleinern:

E I'm totally fascinated with the astronomical quilt project. Of course I'm in! And the block choice was rather easy for me: I simply took one of the star polyhedra from my Stellation quilt  - the small stellated dodekahedron - and made a smaller copy of it according to the required block size 9 1/2":

D  Die Sterne für den Quilt habe ich traditionell gepatcht, d.h. mit Schablonen, angezeichneten Nahtlinien und von Hand. Es hat  alles wunderbar geklappt von den Nahtzugaben abgesehen: das Bügeln war ein Horror, die NZ wollten auf keinen Fall richtig liegen. Aus diesem Grund habe ich für den kleineren Block keine Experimente durchgeführt und habe ihn mit English Paper Piecing gemacht mit vollem Erfolg.

E For the quilt I've used the traditional piecing - with templates, seam lines and hand sewing. It came out very well apart from the pressing of seam allowances: despite all efforts it was a terrible mess. So the smaller version was made in english paper piecing technique and there were no problems at all.

D  Heute habe ich meinen Block versandt und hoffe, dass es auf dem Houston Quiltfestival, wo den Astronomical Quilt (oder vielleicht Quilts) präsentiert wird, mein Sternchen unter mehreren anderen Sternen nicht verloren geht.

E Today I've sent away my block and my best wishes. The astronomical quilt (or maybe quilts) is to be seen at Houston quilt show and my little geometrical object will be there too, a star amongst stars.

Stellation quilt

D  Es ist nicht einfach für mich in Deutschland an einem Quiltfestival in Russland teilzunehmen. Aber ich habe das doch gemacht als ich das Thema erfahren habe, nämlich Sternequilts. Was kann für eine traditionelle Quilterin (besser gesagt für a contemporary quilter wie ich) besser sein als Sterne? Nichts abgesehen von Log Cabin! Also an die Arbeit. Was für Sterne soll ich machen wusste ich seit Ewigkeit: Sternkörper!

Sternkörper sind regelmäßige Polyheder, deren Seitenfläche keine "normale" Polygone sondern Sterne sind. In Wirklichkeit -  wenn man von der Wirklichreit der idealen Objekte sprechen kann -  sehen die Sternkörper als wunderschöne  sehr komplexe Sterne. Die vier von mir ausgewählten Sternkörper, sogenannte Kepler-Poinsot-Körper, sind mindestens 200 Jahre alt, also mein Quilt würde keine Urheberrecht verletzen.

E It's not very easy for me in Germany to take part at a quilt festival in Russia. But the theme of 2014 was Stars and what can be better for a traditional quilter (or a contemporary quilter like me)? Nothing except for Log Cabin. So I've decided to take part. The idea of a star quilt came quickly. In fact I had them in mind since my school days - stellated polyhedra (I had strange school days, really)

Stellation is, as Kepler described in 1619, "the process of extending edges or faces until they meet to form a new polygon or polyhedron". Luckily for me these new polyhedra look like very complex and beautiful stars. From a great set of stellation I've chosen four basic "stars", so-called Kepler-Poinsot polyhedra. The youngest of them is from the year 1809, so there should be no copyright problems.

Origami Squares strike again

D  Endlich ist es soweit: ich gebe einen Patchwork-Kurs! Am 19. Februar in Schwetzingen. Das Thema ist mein Lieblingsblock seit Jahren, und zwar Origami-Quadrat.

Die erste Tasche mit dem Origami-Quadrat habe ich im Jahr 2007 nach einem japanischen Buch gemacht und seitdem mehrere Male nachgemacht. Denn sie war so populär! Die Leute auf den Strassen... ok, nicht direkt auf der Strassen, aber mehrmals auf den Patchwork-Ausstellungen haben mich  in die Ecke getrieben und verlangt, dass ich sofort auf der Stelle erklärte, wie der Block gemacht wurde.

E At last! I'll give a patchwork workshop! At February 19 in Schwetzingen. The theme is the Origami Square, my favorite block for ages. I´ve made my first bag with origami squares in 2007 and made several copies since then, for it was so popular! The people at the streets... ok, not directly at the streets, but the people at quilt excibitions cornered me and demanded an immediate explanation how to fold the block.

D  Für den Kurs jedoch konnte ich das Model nicht verwenden: 1) es ist nicht mein Entwurf und 2) erwies sich als sehr Zeitaufwendig. Also ich habe eine neue Tasche entworfen Die sollte einfacher und schneller nachzumachen sein

E Still I couldn't use the bag for the workshop: 1) it was not my original model and 2) it was way too complicated. So I've made another one that should be easier to do and to explain.

D  Ich bin besonders stolz auf die Taschengriffe, die habe ich extra für dieses Modell ausgedacht:

D  So sehen die Origamiquadrate aus. Meine eigene mehrjärige Crashtests zeigen, dass der Block super stabil, machinenwashbar und bügelfrei ist.
E Here is the closeup of the origami squares. My own  longtime crashtests  show that the block is very sturdy, can be washed in the washing mashine and do not need ironing.
