Our bag ladies are in the magazine again

D  Als ich das neue Sonderheft von Lenas Patchwork "Trendige Taschen"  bekommen habe, erwartete ich meine Tasche mit Origami-Quadraten da zu sehen. Die war da, aber nicht nur die: das Heft ist  mit den Taschen von "meinen" Bag-Ladies vollgestopft! Unter Bag-Ladies meine ich die Teilnehmerinnen der virtuellen Gruppe "Taschen kann's nie genug sein", wie die Taschen im Heft gelandet haben, wurde hier erzählt. Und nun kann man eine neue Taschenserie in voller Pracht sehen.

E Yesterday I've got the new special issue of Lenas Patchwork magazine. There should be my Origami Square tote bag there and there was it, but not only that. A full load of bags from "my" bag ladies! I mean the members of the virtual bag group "A Girl Can't Have Too Many Handbags". I've told about it before and now you can see the rest of chosen bags!

Voronoi bag

D  Es war ein reiner Zufall dass ich die Voronoi-Diagramme im Internet entdeckt habe. Nie vorher habe ich etwas darüber gehört und ich war total fasziniert mit dessen Schönheit und den Designmöglichkeiten die sie geben können.

"Die Voronoi-Zelle eines Ortes p ist die Menge aller Punkte der Ebene, die p näher liegen als jedem anderen Ort. Die Menge aller Voronoi-Zellen zu Orten aus S heißt das Voronoi-Diagramm zu S." Die Definition mag ein wenig unklar wirken, aber die Anwendungen von Voronoi-Diagrams sind so zahlreich und wichtig, dass ich mir Mühe gegeben habe, das Thema genauer zu untersuchen. Unter Anderem gibt's jede Menge naturobjekte, die wie diese Giagramme aussehen: das Muster eines Schmetterlingflügel, die Zellstrukturen, Giraffenflecken und viel mehr.

In einem 3D-Modelling-Forum habe ich ein Bild mit einem Voronoi-Diagramm gefunden, das mir besonders ansprach. Das könnte mein nächtes Quiltprojekt sein, vorerst musste ich aber die Technik und das Muster testen. Und ich habe's gemacht indem ich eine neue Tasche genäht habe!

E It was just an accident that I've found Voronoi diagrams in the internet. I never heard about them before and I was totally fascinated with the design possibilities they can give.

The Voronoi diagram is a special partitioning of a plane: if there's a given set of points (called generators or seeds) then for each seed there is a corresponding region consisting of all points closer to that seed than to any other. There are numerous applications for Voronoi diagrams, and the nature itself uses them: a butterfly wing, a cellular structure, the spots on a giraffe's body illustrate how beautiful these diagrams can be.

In a forum about 3D-modelling I found a very interesting sample of Voronoi diagrams. It could be a great quilt - I thought. But not without a test. Let me show you my test - naturally it's a bag!

D  Ich habe den gesamten Nähvorgang für die Oberfläche notiert - 21 Schritt insgesamt! Einige In-Prozess-Fotos:

E I wrote down the whole process of surface building - it took 21 steps just for the front/back side, the side parts and the bottom not counting. Here are the WIP photos:

D  Die abgerissenen Stoffstücke (Bandanatücher, Karos, schöner Stoff mit Briefen) wurden aufs Thermolam gelegt und mit nicht besonders parallelen Linien dicht gequiltet

E Torn pieces of bandanas, plaids and  of a precious fabric with letters are laid on a lining and densely quilted with not very parallel lines

D  Eine Stoffbahn aus Jeansbeinen und ein Stück Pausenpapier mit dem Muster liegen obendrauf, alle Tellengrenzen sind schon nachgenäht, nun braucht man die inneren Regionen vorsichtig ausschneiden, dabei versuchen die unterliegenden Lagen nicht zu beschädigen.

Seitenteile und der Boden der Tasche habe ich anders gemacht, ohne Voronoi-Diagramme:

E The pattern was drawn on a tissue paper, the cell boundaries are already marked, now is the time to cut off the inside parts of the cells trying not to cut through the other layers.

The side panels and the bottom are made in another way:

D  Ich hatte vor, oben einen Reißverschluss einzunähen. Ich habe ihn sogar gekauft, aber irgendwie passte er nicht zu dem allgemeinen lapidaren Stil. Deswegen habe ich als Verschluss nur 2 Magnetknöpfe angenäht:

E I wanted to make a zipped closure. I've already purchased the zipper, but the bag didn't look properly with it. So I've sewn just two magnetic button as a closure:

D  Die Ecken sind ein bißchen verspielt:

D  Ich habe die Tasche für die Geometrie-Challenge in meiner Taschengruppe eingereicht. Nun kann ich mit dem Voronoi-Quilt anfangen, keine Tests mehr!

Africa Tote Bag

D Der Quilt Afrika war äußerst schwer. Ich meine, er wog eine Tonne und war kaum unter dem Maschinenfuß zu bewegen. Ganz von den unzahligen Jeansnähten zu schweigen. Es was völlig unmöglich, ihn mit free-motion quilting zu quilten. Ich mußte also ein Quiltmuster für den Onertransporter ausdenken und es auf jeden Fall vorher testen. Laut meiner neuen Richtlinie startete ich sofort mit einer Testtasche anstatt vom Testsandwich.

Die gequilteten "Felder" sind Fortsetzungen und Erweiterungen der Straßen aus einem der Stoffstücke:

E  The Africa quilt was really heavy and consisted mostly of seam allowances. It prevented me completely from the free motion quilting and returned me to the old good walking foot. And I had to make the quilting test first. And again I decided to make a test bag, not just a test quilt.

Here it is. The quilting lines continue the pattern from one of the fabrics:

D Innerhalb von "Feldern" habe ich noch die "Rillen" gequiltet. Die Rillen gibt's auf dem Quilt nicht: eine Sache ist, eine relativ kleine Tasche unterm Maschinenfuß zu drehen und ganz Andere, den 120x120 cm großen Quilt. Ich habe lediglich die "Felder" geschafft.

E As you can see, I wanted to quilt not just "fields"; but a kind of furrows inside the fields. It worked for the bag, but the quilt was still too heavy even for such straight-line furrows.

D Erst nach der Umfassung des Quitls mit supertollem Mandarinorange habe ich die Tasche fertiggemacht.

E I decorated the bag with the same gorgeous mandarin orange color I took for the binding of a quilt:

D Im Grunde ist es eine Einkaufstüte. Die unteren Ecken sind abgenäht, die Tasche ist gefuttert und hat ein Innenfach mit Reißverschluss. Nur die Form ist mal anders.

E Actually, the bag is a slightly improved version of a darted tote bag, with lining and a zipped inside pocket. It's just the slanted form that makes the difference.

D Die tolle Farbe entspricht seht genau der Farbe des Auto auf dem Foto unten. Es ist nicht mein Auto! Die Tasche links auf der Bank:

E I've found this car staying nearby. It's not mine. But the color matches perfectly to the bag:

My version of Africa

D  Diesjährige Challenge der Heidelberger Patchworkgilde  war "Afrika". Nicht gerade mein Thema, abes in Moment gbit es kein großes Angebot an Challenges in der Nähe. Andererseits, schon einige Jahre lagen bei mir einige Fat Quarters - ein Geschenk von meiner Quiltfreindin aus Afrika. Jetzt oder nie, sagte ich zu mir und fing an zu grübeln.

E The annual challenge in the quilt guild of Heidelberg was to make an african-themed quilt.  It's not exactly my theme but there aren's many quilt challenges nearby either. Then again, several years ago a quilt friend of mine sent me a bunch of african fabrics, so "now or never", I thought and started to create something out of it.

D  Zuerst machte ich eine Skizze in CorelDraw. Der Quilt sollte ca. 120 x 120 cm groß sein.
E First of all there was a CorelDraw project with a real size fabric pieces:

D  Das war meine erste beste Idee mit den Stoffen. Eine Woche wartete ich ab und hoffte, dass noch andere bessere Ideen kommen. Leider vergeblich. Mir blieb nicht anders übrig als mit diesem Layout anzufangen.

E It was the very first idea I had with those fabrics. For about a week I struggled with myself trying to think up something different, but then I gave up and took this layout.

D  Den Hintergrund bastelte ich auch Jeansreste und dann maschinell applizierte afrikanische Streifen mit unsichbarem Garn darauf. Ich quiltete alles mit dem Obertransporter, denn wegen des gewichts des Quilts und der unzahligen Nähten war vom Free-motion quilting nicht zu denken. Ich knotete die Oberfläche mit  farbige Knoten und fasste den Quilt mit schönem Sicherheitswestenorange um.

E I appliqueed african stripes on this background with an invisible thread and quilted the whole with a walking foot. It was a challenge by itself due to heavy weight of denim and numerous seams. Then I tyed the quilt with contrast (but matching) colours and binded it with beautiful red orange fabric.

D  Übrigens: was das Quiltmuster betrifft. Ich musste unbedingt das Quilten vorher testen. Was aus diesem Teststück wurde, erfahren Sie im nächsten Post.

E By the way, the quilting pattern. I had to test it on a scrap before to start quilting the quilt. In the next post I'll tell you what happened with that test piece.

Our bag ladies in the Jeans Recycling magazine

D  Ich bin überglücklich und so stolz auf meine Taschenladies! Ich meine die Mitglieder von der Gruppe "Taschen kann's nie genug sein". Seit langem habe ich das Gefühl dass unsere Gruppe in der Handarbeitswelt unterschätzt wird. Wir sind keine Quilterinnen, keine Strickerinnen oder Stickerinnen, wir machen Artobjekte von Taschen. In Japan gibt es auf den Quiltshows eine Extrakategorie "Bag Quilt" für die Taschen wie die unseren. Aber hier im Abendland versteht man unter einer Tasche  oft fast immer nur eine Einkaufstüte. Ich gebe mir viel Mühe, diesen Sichtpunkt zu ändern. Aus diesem Grund habe ich vor einige Monaten die Fotos von der Taschenchallenge "Jeans Atmosphere" fürs Sonderheft Jeans-Recycling eingereicht. Viele Monate verging, gute Arbeit geleistet und endlich sind drei unsere Taschen im Heft!


E I'm so happy and so proud of my bag ladies! I mean the members of a group "A Girl Can't Have Too Many Handbags". I always consider our group under-estimated in the craft world. We are not quilters nor knitters or felters, we make art objects of a bag. In Japan there is a category on big quilt events called "Bag quilt". But for us gaijin a bag is most often only a tote. I try hard to change this point of view. Some months ago I've sent photos of our bag challenge "Jeans Atmosphere" to a German craft magazine for a special issue Jeans Recycling. It took its time, but now there are three our purses in the magazine!

IKEA - Miracle of Denim

D  Ich brauchte dringend eine neue Schultertasche, denn ich hatte keine mehr. "Keine" bedeutet dass alle meine Schultertaschen  verkauft, verschenkt, zu abgetragen waren oder zu schön um getragen zu werden. Mit meiner alten Flying-Geese-Tasche war ich absolut zufrieden, deswegen wollte ich eine neue Version von ihr haben. Aus meinen Vorräten habe ich einen anderen IKEA-Stoff namens Susanna rausgefischt, nur war dieser nicht mit Dreiecken, sondern mit Kreisen, wird nicht mehr produziert. Der Stoff sehnte nach einen ruhigen Hintergrundstoff und ich wollte eine schwarze Jeanshose dafür nehmen. Beim Zerschneiden der Jeanshose habe ich etwas tolles entdeckt, namlich: die Hose wurde mit einem schönen Baumwollstoff mit dem Druck "miracle of denim" gefüttert. Einige Fragmente des Futterstoffs habe ich  mit Vliesofix auf die Taschenoberfläche aufgebügelt und mit mehreren Stichreihen zusätzlich befestigt:


E I've decided to make a new shoulder bag for me, for I had none more. "None" means that all my numerous shoulder bags were sold, given away or too battered. (or too good to wear). I've used the pattern from my ole good IKEA Flying Geese bag and wanted to make a new version of it. There was  yet another IKEA fabric in my stach, IKEA Susanna with circles, now out of print. Then the fabric asked for a plain (black) background. By cutting apart a pair of black jeans I've found something extremely useful - a pocket lining with a printed text "Miracle of denim" and right away incorporated the fabric into the bag. I've fused the scraps of lining onto the bag parts and secured them with several lines of stitching:

D  Dann habe ich die gesamte Oberfläche mit free-motion  quilting gequiltet. Man sieht, dass ich seit Langem nicht geübt habe: keine Quiltlinie sheint den Konturen zu folgen. "Es soll eine tragbare Tasche für mich sein und kein Kunstwerk", habe ich zu mir gesagt und habe es so gelassen.

E Then I've quilted the whole surface with free-motion quilting. I've been out of practice in FMQ and you can see it - no backtracking at all. "But this should be the wearable bag for me, not the family heirloom", I said to myself and let it go.

D  Die neue Tasche wurde schon getestet und erwies sich als äußerst gut.

Square+ Chenille + Jeans = Rucksack

D  Ich habe diese Technik und dieses Model vor einigen Jahren entdeckt und war sofort entzückt. Damals habe ich gleich zwei Rücksäcke gemacht für meine liebe Freundinnen:

E I´ve discovered this technique and this model years ago and fell in love with it. I´ve made then two such Rucksacks for my dear friends 

D  Seitdem habe ich noch einige Taschen in Square Chenille-Technik gemacht und alle verschenkt. Ich selbst jedoch bleibe one Chenillerucksack wie ein Schuster ohne Schuhe. Um diese Lücke zu schließen habe ich auch für mich einen Square-Chenille-Rucksack aus recycelten Jeanshosen und pinkfarbenen Stoffen gemacht:

E Since then several more square chenille bags were made and given away. As a result, I have not any single square chenille tote. So I decided to close this gap and to make one specially for me out of recycled jeans and pink and rosa cotton solids:

D Auf der Rückseite gibt´s 2 Außenfächer, eins davon mit Reißverschluss, verstellbare Riemen, Verschluss durch eine Cordel und Ösen; alles inklusiv:

E The Rucksack has two pockets at the backside, adjuctable straps, eyelets and a cord for a closure, all that little things.

D  Was ich an die Chenille liebe, dass sie nich nur waschmaschinenfest ist: nach dem Waschen in einer Waschmaschine wird die Tasche noch flauschiger.

E One of the reason why I love chenille is that it`s machine washable and the more you wash it, the more fluffy it is.

D  Warum erzähle ich das alles? Meine Freunde haben mich so oft gefragt, wann fange ich mit dem Verkauf meiner Taschen an, dass ich endlich alle meine Entschlossenheit gesammelt und einen DaWanda-Shop eroffnet habe. Und gerade dieser Rucksack, genauer gesagt, sein Replicat, ist Nr. 1 in dem neuen Shop. Herzlich wilkommen also!
