The Little Village bag

D  Diese Tasche habe ich im September 2014 gemacht, habe jedoch volkommen vergessen, sie hier zu zeigen. Nun korrigiere ich diesen Fehler.

Es gab eine neue Challenge in meiner Taschengruppe. Zu dieser Zeit war ich nicht sicher, ob ich überhaupt in der Gruppe bleibe. Dann dachte ich: eine Tasche mit Häusern (das war gerade das Thema der Challenge) kann frau immer gebrauchen und fing an meinen Minidorf zu kreiieren. Als Material habe ich endlich unzahlige abgeschnittene Hemdenärmel genommen, die ich mal von einer Näherin geschenkt bekommen hatte:

E I've made this bag in September 2014, but quite forgot to show it. Better late than never, so I'll show it now.

There was another Challenge in out bag group. It was a hard time for me, I really thought about leaving the group. But then again, every quilter and every bag lady should have a bag with houses (that was the theme of the challenge - "Hauses"), so I decided to make one for me. The fabric choice was quite obvious for me: I took the numerous cut off shirt sleeves I got from a seamstress:

 
D  Ich habe einige kleine Häuserblöcke in CorelDraw gezeichnet, ausgedruckt und dann ging mein Rechner plötzlich und endgültig kaputt. Zwei Wochen lebte ich ohne Computer, ohne Internet (das wäre an sich nicht so schlimm),ohne CorelDraw, ohne nichts. Und die Challenge konnte nicht warten. Ich musste also das Schnittmuster für die Tasche von Hand zeichnen. In 3facher Ausführung auf alle Fälle. Eine Affenarbeit war es, jawohl:

E I made some paper piecing templates for the houses in CorelDraw, printed them out and then my computer was at once and forever dead. More than 2 week I lived without the computer, without the internet (that's not so bad per se), without my CorelDraw. And the deadline for the challenge was coming. So I had to draw the bag patterns by hand! Three copies. And I'm not a drawing person.

D  Als Anhänger für Reißverschlüsse habe ich Hemdenknöpfe verwendet. Und aus Manschetten Schlaufen für die Karabinerhaken gemacht. Das Futter ist auch aus den Ärmeln:

E I used the shirt buttons for zip pullers and made the loops for the snap hooks. The lining is from the sleeves too:

IKEA Miracle of Denim II: without IKEA or denim

D Die Tasche  IKEA - Miracle of Denim  ist mir so gut gelungen dass ich eine Einladung bekam, einen Kurs über sie zu machen. Für den Kurs habe ich eine neue Version der Tasche gemacht, Leider habe ich Stoffbedarf  fasch auskalkuliert und enttäuscht entdeckt, dass ich nicht genug Hauptstoff habe. Zum Glück gab es immer noch genug Stoff um einen gepatchten Taschentop zu machen. Was ich auch gemacht habe.

Ich mag schwarz-weiße Stoffe über alles, aber oft brauchen sie meiner Meinung nach einige Farbakzente. Ich habe schmale bunte Streifen auf den Zeitungsstoff aufgebügelt und dann auf der gesamten Oberfläche breite Zigzacklinien als Strahlen gestickt, dabei die Stoffstreifen befestigt und gleichzeitig den Quiltsandwich gequiltet.

Nach der Kampf mit den Reißverschlussen, Schnallen und Riemen (wir sind ständig im Kampfzustand) war die Tasche fertig. So sieht sie aus:

E The bag IKEA - Miracle of Denim had such a great success that I was asked to make a workshop on it. For the workshop I've made another version of the bag out of the fabrics of the shop owner. Unfortunately, I've miscalculated the fabric amount and got not enough of focus fabric (black and white newspaper pattern). But there was still enough fabric to make a pieced bag top. So I've made a kind of irregular sawtooth stripe to join the black and the printed fabric..

I just love black and white fabrics, but as for me they often need a touch of color. I've added some narrow strips of bright batiks: fused them on the newspaper fabric and then secured them and at the same time quilted the surface with wide zigzag lines through all layers of quilt sandwich.

After several minor difficulties with the closure, zippers and handles (I always have difficulties with them) all the parts took their place and now the bag looks like this:

D Als Zierstoff habe ich noch ein Fat Eight von einem schwarzgepunkteten Stoff bekommen, der ist am oberen Rand auf der Innenseite der Tasche zu sehen.
E Forgot to say, I've got a fat eight of black dotted fabric, you can see it inside the bag at the opening.

D Das ist die einzige Aufnahme wo man das Quilting des Taschenboden sehen kann.

D Und auf diesem Foto sieht man fast alle Points der Tasche: spritzerförmige Applikation, ein Reißverschlussfach hinten,Zickzackpatchwork und die Riemen.

July FMQ Challenge Tutorial: the results

D  Was Nützliches konnte ich tun aus meinem Free-Motion-Juli-Probestück? Schon seit einiger Zeit wünschte ich mir eine Matte mit Taschen für meine Nähmaschine. Die Größe des Rohlings passte (50 x 50 cm). Ich brauchte nur noch einen Streifen quilten und ihn zusammen mit dem Quilt umfassen, einige Trennlinien quer zu nähen und fertig ist die Matte!

E What useful thing could I make out of my Bauhaus practise piece? I really needed a sewing machine mat, eventually with pockets. So I´ve quilted another stripe with the pattern of Angela Walters and bound it together with a main part. And now you have it:

D  Was für ein quadratisches Zeug liegt da auf der Nähmachine? Ich fand, dass die Maschine zu viel Platz in Anspruch nimmt, sodass das Bauhaus-Design nicht mehr sichtbar ist. Deswegen habe ich ein passendes Bauhaus-Nadelkissen gemacht, um das Stil noch mehr zu betonen. Ich habe das Mondrian-ähnlliches Bild in der Wikipedia gefunden und ein Paper-Piecing-Muster daraus gemacht. Das Nadelkissen ist 7x7x2 cm groß, die schwarzen Streifen sind 2 mm breit.

E And what is this square thing on a machine? As for me, the machine takes too much place and the bauhaus design is hardly visible, so I´ve made a matching constructivist pincushion I´ve found a Mondrian-like picture in the Wiki and convert it to a paper piecing pattern. The size is 7x7x2 cm, the black stripes are 2 mm wide.

Mariner´s Compass - neither a quilt nor Japanese

D  Ich mache keine Miniquilts. Stattdessen mache ich Taschen, die wie Miniquilts sind, nur besser: eine neue Tasche kann frau immer gebrauchen. Etwa ungefähr wie diese oder diese. Im Moment sind meine Quiltfreundinnen wie besessen von Miniquilts - vielleicht weil die weltberühmte Miniquilts-Queen Kumiko Frydl nach Frankreich zum Carrefour européen du patchwork 2012 kommt. Ihre Quilts sind Perfektion pur und meine  (noch) nicht. Aber es ist nicht verboten auszuprobieren ob ich ihren 15 cm größen Mariner´s Compass Block nachmachen kann. Da ich keinen Quilt brauchte (dafür aber DRINGEND noch eine Tasche) habe ich ein rundes Schmuckkästchen gemacht, eine Art Schatzkiste. Glücklicherweise passte diese Schatulle zum Thema unserer Challenge in meiner virtuellen Taschengruppe, zwar "Wasserwelten".

E Actually I don´t make miniquilts. Instead, I make bags that are like miniquilts; but better - a girl can´t have too many handbags, you know. Something like this other this. Now my quiltfriends are crazy about miniquilts - maybe because Kumiko Frydl, the queen of miniquilts, are coming to the European Patchwork Meeting in Alsace. She is definitely Miss Perfect and I am not. But it was worth of trying - to make a 64-pointed Mariner´s Compass block like the one from her most famous "Mission: Impossible?" Since I don´t need a miniquilt (and BADLY need another bag) I´ve made a purse, a kind of treasure chest for my scarce jewellery. Luckily there was a new challenge "Waterworld" in our bag group and both Mariners Compass and Treasure Chest fitted perfectly to the theme.

D  Der Compass hat ca. 18 cm Durchmesser. Das paper piecing war einfacher als ich dachte. Ich habe alle Linien nachgequiltet und noch ein wenig free motion quilting hinzugefügt. Ich habe auch die andere Seite der Tasche gepatcht,obwohl ich genau wusste, dass dies die untere Seite sein und deswegen fast immer unsichbar bleiben soll.

E The size of a compass is about 7". The paper piecing was not extremely hard. Not hard at all. I quilted all the lines in the ditch and added a bit of a free-motion quilting - I´m still no more than a beginner in FMQ. Then I made the other side of the purse, the side that won´t be visible most of the time:

D  Ich habe keine Innenfächer gemacht, weil mir das Quilten gefiel und ich nicht bedecken wollte.

E I didn´t make any inner pockets because I rather liked the quilted back side and didn´t want to cover it.

D  Ich freue mich dass es das Internet gibt. Sonst  würde meine Schatzkiste ganz einsam auf einem Regal stehen, keiner könnte die unglückliche untere Seite sehen und kaum jemand die Obere.

 E Isn´t it wonderful to have an internet? Now the treasure chest stays on a shelf by me at home, nobody sees the back side and hardly anyone - the challenging Mariner´s Compass.
