D Es war noch eine Challenge in unserer virtuellen Taschengruppe und das Thema lautete "Cherchez la femme". Auf der Tasche soll ein Frauenbild stehen, dabei durfte es aber keine abstrakte Idee von einem Frauenbild sein. Für mich war das keine einfache Aufgabe, denn zeichnen kann ich nach wie vor nicht. Glücklicherweise habe ich aus meinen Stoffvorräten ein Stück von einem alten und hässlichen (?) Stoff rausgefischt:

We had to make any kind of bag/purse/tote/rucksack with any kind of woman portrait, not an abstract idea of a portrait or a woman. It wasn't an easy task for me since - you know - I'm not a drawing person. But luckily enough I've found a piece of old and ugly(?) fabric in my stash, someone's giveaway:
D Als Hintergrundstoff habe ich nichts Besseres gefunden als einen alten Armee-Wäschesack mit ein paar Löcher wegen des häufigen Nutzens:
E As a matching background fabric I couldn't find anything better than an old armee laundry bag with holes in it due to frequent use:
D Der Futterstoff ist auch Klasse: dunkelblaue Paisleys und braune Rosen (leider ohne Foto). Also aus all diesem Kram entstand so eine Tasche:
E I've found a matching lining too: a gorgeous fabric with navy blue paisleys and brown roses (without a photo, sorry). Also a little bit of this or that, a small piece of (new) brown op-art fabri and at the end the bag looked like this:
D Beide Stoffe, sowohl das Panel mit dem Mädchen als auch der Wäschesack, waren zu gebrechlich fürs Maschinenquilting. Deswegen wurde die Tasche völlig von Hand gequiltet. Freiform-Sashiko auf dem Deckel:
E Both fabrics, the focus fabric with the girl and the laundry bag fabric, were too old and frail for the machine quilting, so I've quilted the bag entirely by hand. Freeform sashiko-like quilting on the front flap:
D ... und sonst das einfache Gittermuster, wie hier auf dem Rückenfach:
E ... and a regular grid everywhere else, like here at the back pocket:
D Als Verschluss dienen zwei Magnetknöpfe unter der Klappe:

D Das Panel mit dem Mädchen wurde ziemlich stark zurückgeschnitten, vom ursprünlichen Stoff blieb nicht viel übrig. Aber das Wort Marlene war immer noch da. Und welcher Name kann besser sein für eine Tasche aus einem alten Stoff mit Ausschnitten aus alten deutschen Modezeitschriften und aus einem amerikanischen Wäschesack? Lili Marleen kam als die einzige Antwort. Vor Kurzem habe ich eine Ausstellung über Lili Marleen besucht und war für das Gesehene absolut begeistert.
Bis zur letzten Minute konnte ich mich nicht entscheiden, ob die Tasche schon fertig ist oder ob ich noch die cremefarbene Spitze an die Klappe anbringen soll.. Die Tasche sollte ein Gebrauchsgegenstand sein und die Spitze ist alles anderes als praktisch. Dann jedoch sagte ich zu mir: in der harten modernen Welt kann doch ein bißchen Platz für Zärtlichkeit und Zerbrechlichkein sein. Und nun sieht die Lili Marleen so aus:

But "Marlene" was still there and what name could be better for a bag made out of a fabric with excerpts from German mode magazines and an american army laundry bag? Lili Marleen was the only choice. Not a long time before there was an excibition in Heidelberg entirely devoted to Lili Marleen and I was totally fascinated by the history and the song itself.
Until the last moment I didn't know, whether the bag would be better "as is" or with a cream lace at the flap. I hesitated since the bag was made for everyday use and the lase is not the most practical thing. But then I thought, in our harsch world there has to be place for tenderness and fragility. So I've decided to sew the lace on:
